Pack-fit

Pack smarter before you hit the trail.

Specs and sources

How the estimate works

  • Usable space is taken as 85% of the pack's nominal capacity, allowing for space lost between items.
  • Gear volume is added up. Soft items (sleeping bags, clothing) are a range, because how much they compress depends on the item and how it is packed. Semi-rigid items count at 115% of their volume.
  • “May be tight” when the upper estimate is above 90% of usable space; “Likely won’t fit” when even the compressed estimate is above usable space; “Very unlikely to fit” when it is above the nominal capacity, or a rigid item is larger than the pack's published size in every orientation.
  • Rigid items are checked one at a time against the pack's published size. Most packs only publish outside dimensions, which can show an item is too large but not that it fits. Fitting several rigid items together is not checked.
  • Weight is compared with the pack's recommended maximum load. Food, water and the pack itself are not included.
  • Estimates use Pack-fit assumptions where a manufacturer publishes nothing, which makes a result less certain.

Specification sources

Values marked “Published” come from these manufacturer pages, and each one keeps the page’s own wording. “Calculated” values are worked out from published figures, and “Estimate” values are Pack-fit assumptions, explained next to each value. Specifications can change; check the source before relying on them.
